But what's interesting about the pockets in the post-Second World War period is that there are still really strong ideas about whether women should or shouldn't have pockets.
The battle for pockets is not over.
Let's take two designers from the luxury fashion world from the middle of the 20th century as a bit of an example.
First up, the French fashion designer Coco Chanel.

Um and she can be seen in a number of iconic photos, standing with her hands in her pockets.
She's very relaxed.
It's a kind of powerful stance, what would have been seen as quite manly for that day.

I mean that's something that's traditionally is only for men's clothing.
Yeah.
Um and her big thing is that elegance should not come at the cost of comfort.
And her strapline was luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury.
But then on the other side of the room we have another French designer called Christian Dior.
And in nineteen fifty four, he said quite plainly, men have pockets to carry things, and women's pockets are for decoration.
Yeah, maybe they don't want them and maybe they also don't need them.
It's just decoration.
