As I tried to wipe pink water from my eyes, legs thrashing and sending waves of liquid splashing over the edge, flooding the room further, I could only think that I wanted it all to be over.

I screamed, hoarse and blood-curdling.

The creature kept chewing, slowly tearing away pieces of my skin, as if it were a delicate meal, almost gentle with its touch.
As my consciousness slowly faded to black,
My last thought was unbidden.
Not a goodbye to my family and friends, but instead, something as morbid and dark as the water swallowing me whole.
It would have been better to just drown.
At first light, Ada enters the threshold of the forest, adjusting the strap of her heavy satchel to negate the weight digging into her shoulder.
Birdsong cuts out.
The smell of morning dew reminds her of happier springtimes.
