I went to check, and sure enough, there it was, right inside the door.
I was pulling it out when I heard Mrs. Ethel stumble and cry out.
I slammed the door shut, dropped the belt, and rushed to help her.
After getting her safely back to bed, I dialed the plumber to tell him I found his belt.
He promised to come by first thing in the morning.
All I had to do was go into the local newspaper archives and type in the address, and I couldn't believe all the information that came up.
It's true what Mrs. Ethel said about her and her husband designing and building their house themselves, but they never said anything about the foundation.
Knowing they built the house in the 40s, I started my search for details on the property earlier.
In 1910, I worked my way forward.
In 1913, I found my first hit, a marriage announcement for a Mr. and Mrs. Robert Agox.
He was a big, mean-looking brute, with his big, bushy beard and a hardened scowl upon his face even on his wedding day.
His appearance was in stark contrast to that of his wife, who appeared just as tiny and delicate as could be.
The next entry was two years later, in 1915, a birth announcement.
Seems they had a baby girl named Victoria.
Good for them.
In 1924, though, it seemed that things took a very bad turn.
Robert's wife and little daughter went missing under questionable circumstances.
The article made a point of saying that Mr. Agox hadn't been charged with anything, but that his wife and the girl had been missing for a few months.
The last article I found was from early 1925.
It reported that the Agox house had burned down to its foundation, with Robert inside.
