They trapped him and burned down everything around him so he could never escape.

I heard the screaming again tonight.

The sound of feet pounding up those stairs, of fists banging on the door trying to get out.

Then there was silence, followed by static.

Before it last, the sound of Mrs. Ethel snoring broke through that white noise.

And then I heard the unmistakable sound of a door creaking open.

My hand shook as I reached for the monitor.

I turned it off.

I didn't want to hear any more.

After a few minutes, I crept over to the window and peeked out.

I waited.

Eventually, I saw a dark shape, black as ash, staggering away from the house.

I felt a rush of relief as the figure limped away.

As it moved toward the edge of the trees, I saw its silhouette top right of the edge of the property.

As it, he, stood there.

I could swear he's staring right at me.

I held my breath and held it until I was about to burst, but I was too scared to move.

Just when I thought I couldn't hold it any longer, he turned and walked off into the night.

Now all I can do is sit here, waiting, and tell my story while I still have the chance.
