And I mean a lot.

Aside from the scheduled things like meals and baths, all I do is hang out waiting for her to call on me.

Trips to the bathroom mostly, and like I said, she's real old.

She's from a very different time than us, if you know what I mean.

She was brought up believing that servants were to be invisible unless needed.

So if I'm not helping her with something, I'm supposed to make myself scarce.

I don't even stay in the main house with her.

And it certainly isn't because she's got a lack of space.

She's got a huge house.

A big old one.

That fact is important.

But we'll get to that shortly.

Anyway, me and the girls who work during the week, we stay in a little room attached by a covered porch to the main house.

The room's got a bed, desk, and a bathroom with a shower.

Everything we need.

I just stay in there watching TV or doing homework until she called for me.

See, she's got this baby monitor hooked up, one unit in her room, and the other one out in the staff quarters.

I have to keep the monitor turned on at all times, and it's one way, so I can hear her, but she's not bothered by any noise I might make.

I don't mind it so much, except for late at night when she gets talking to nobody.

It's downright unsettling to hear her whispering stuff over the static of that little speaker in the middle of the night.
