Another piece of news today came from the mortgage market, which is also interestingly connected to all this.
kind of a reflection of how the price of oil goes into the cost of shipping, all kinds of things.
And so there is a concern about inflation, how the government would respond with interest rates.
Already, fuel prices are driving up the yield on the 10-year Treasury bond.
And this is the part that matters.
That has been boosting mortgage rates.
The average rate for a 30-year mortgage hit 6.58% this week, the highest in nearly a year.
June was marked by a tentative ceasefire in the war with Iran, so energy prices fell last month.
And that delivered one of the best inflation reports in a while.
Prices actually fell from May to June.
And so the new data on retail sales suggests that cooler prices brought cooler spending.
Sales at gas stations actually declined compared to May.
So did spending at grocery stores and pharmacies.
Now comparing June to June of last year, spending is up 6.7%.
A lot of it is inflation with people spending more just because things cost more.
But shoppers did seem to splurge a bit on Prime Day sales, World Cup gear, and perhaps early school supplies, with big jumps at bookstores, sporting goods stores, and electronics stores.

The quarter between March and June saw big swings in gas prices because of the U.S.
war in Iran, and PepsiCo executives say the impact has been, quote, meaningful.
It's especially hurt sales at gas stations and convenience stores, where people are no longer grabbing that snack or drink like they used to when they fill up.
