Our kids really, really struggle.

with something not going their way.

We use the term we have to be flexible.

And if anyone has heard of social thinking, that's a term that comes from them.

And essentially what we are wanting

to do is teach the child that there's gonna be times when someone else will be flexible and at times you need to be flexible.

So I always first kind of acknowledge their feelings.

I don't ever say, Oh, sometime, you know, we have to be a good sport.

This is just how it is.

I will say I understand that you really wanted to win and it must be really upsetting that you didn't win.

When I don't win, I get really upset too.

But remember that time that you did win and that felt really good.

Do you think that the other, you know, so and so, whoever the other child is?

He probably didn't feel as good too, but it's important.

That we can be flexible and sometimes we win and sometimes we lose.

But it's okay to have your feelings.

It's just not okay to have a big reaction.

But so you're saying I understand your feeling.

But your reaction is the piece that we need to work on, but your feeling is still valid.

It's okay to be upset that you didn't win.
