But the decade-long legal battle between the IRS and Bob Jones University regarding whether it could keep its tax-exempt status changed everything.
Enter Paul Weyrich.
Weyrich was a religious conservative political activist who co-founded, of freaking course, the Heritage Foundation.
Weirich had spent decades trying to identify an issue that would bring evangelicals out of the political wings and irrevocably into the Republican coalition.
If he got the evangelicals, Weirich knew he'd have an unbeatable voting bloc with unlimited potential.
He called this would-be coalition, if he could pull it off, the moral majority, saying that its political power would, quote, exceed our wildest dreams.
Weyrich had tested multiple issues to determine which issue would ignite evangelicals to join the political fray.
He had tried abortion previously, but that didn't work because of the evangelicals' anti-Catholic bias and the anti-abortion movement being so closely aligned with Catholicism.
Remember, in 1973, when the Supreme Court ruled Roe, the anti-abortion movement was almost exclusively Catholic.
And to evangelicals like the Bob Jones evangelicals, the Catholics were occult and not even Christian.
So no dice.
He had tried pornography, prayer in schools, the proposed Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution.
He said, quote, I was trying to get these people interested in these issues, and I utterly failed.
Nothing got their attention until the IRS began to pursue the tax exemption of racially segregated schools, end quote.
Suddenly, with profits at risk and desegregation threatened,
Wyrick had the evangelical leader's attention for the first time.
Bob Jones University was going to lose its status.
Evangelical leaders running highly profitable, segregated institutions were receiving IRS questionnaires threatening their own status.
