Ever since the conception of the Gordie Howe Bridge, the family that owns the Ambassador Bridge has been lobbying hard to get the project stopped.
That led to a lot of hesitation among U.S.
officials about whether to contribute to funding the bridge.
So Canada decided more than a decade ago that this was such a crucial piece of cross-border infrastructure that it would pick up the full tab itself.
and that the bridge would be jointly owned by Canada and the state of Michigan.
But because Canada paid the full cost of the bridge, it would hold on to all of the total revenue until it recouped those costs.
After that, it would split the net revenue with the state of Michigan.
Under an agreement in principle released this month, Canada agreed to split half of the net revenue from the bridge with a economic development fund that would be controlled by the United States for the first 15 years of the bridge's life.
It would also give the United States some say over certain tool changes, a move that many see as favorable to the billionaire family that owns the Ambassador Bridge and that has donated to a Trump-related super PAC this year.
Above average temperatures are forecast for much of the country through to August, and the fire danger is also expected to climb as summer progresses.
Because of Canada's geography, most of the fires that are blazing in Canada right now are very difficult to contain and they are being left to burn.
And to understand why, I think it's important to grapple with the vastness of Canada's forest.
So Canada's boreal forest encompasses 1.3 billion acres.
And for context, that's an area several times larger than that of all of the national forests in the United States combined.
And so when there are so many fires burning across Canada, as there are right now, the focus for authorities is on responding to the fires that are posing a threat to people and to communities and to critical infrastructure.
