Now, Queenstown in the wider Lakes District has set a new record.
Queenstown, home to million-dollar views and now homes with an average $1.8 million price tag.
It's a milestone that might be good news for sellers, but bad news for many people who live there.

So how does this happen in such a wealthy region?
To make sense of it all, today I talked to Queenstown Mayor John Glover, who is desperately trying to find solutions.
And he has fears for developers who are coming in from a flat-lined Auckland housing market, hoping to strike property gold down south.
Today I also chat to Vanessa Williams from realestate.co.nz.
But first, property journalist Nikki Preston, who has just done a detailed story on the situation for One Roof.
She says everyday hard-working Kiwis are being simply priced out of the Queenstown region.
