If a major earthquake does cause Auckland to shake, rattle and roll, could it be as deadly and devastating as, say, Christchurch or Kaikoura?

How at risk are we of a tsunami triggering something like that since we are surrounded by water?

Not only is Auckland surrounded by water, but it's built on a volcanic field.

So if a major earthquake hit, could it potentially trigger volcanic activity?

How far down are these fault lines?

This might seem like a dumb question, so forgive me, but when you go down and you're doing that, exploring what is on down there, can that trigger anything, that sort of earth movement?

Is there a temptation, I guess, I don't know whether that's the right word, to go down and trigger it just so you've got control of it at all?

As a scientist, just how exciting is this for you to have this discovery?

I know when we were at 2026 and with modern technology, can earthquakes in any way be predicted or is that still sort of beyond science?

And in the meantime, James and his team will continue to explore and study the fault lines supported by the Natural Hazards Commission.

But how much does this work actually cost?

And how soon could you tell us that these fault lines are active realistically?

And if one did trigger, how far afield could that be felt?

Because I know even like the Kaikoura one, that was felt in Wellington.

An Auckland one, how far could that go down the country?

Was that in the Port Waikato?
