Yeah, so these GLP one medications have the sort of power to erase these fing feelings of hunger, satiation, cravings, the kinds of urges and impulses that make us eat and make consumers buy packaged food products.
And you know, it's threatening to upend an industry business model that's often relied on selling as much food as possible.
And it sort of renders irrelevant, a proven playbook the industry has perfected by now for decades.
That's involved catering to consumers' palates with things like sugar, salt, and the sort of steadily expanding galaxy flavors.
And so the the question facing food makers right now is how do you sell food to this new class of consumers who just aren't that hungry, whose, you know, favorite foods have maybe lost their appeal altogether.
Yeah, it's become increasingly difficult to ignore.
As many as fifty-five million Americans, which is about fifteen percent of the population, are expected to be on GLP1 drugs by 2035.
And that's according to projections from Morgan Stanley.
And KPMG estimates users consume about a fifth fewer calories while on the medications.
And it's a reduction in calories that JP Morgan sees helping drain the
food and beverage industry of $30 to $55 billion in annual revenue as soon as 2030.
Yeah, so first and foremost, these these companies are investing in sort of understanding this new class of of emerging consumers.
And so companies like Canagra, which is the maker of Slim Gyms and Hungry Man Dinners, has been sort of combing through all sorts of data from credit cards, social media posts, things like fast food menus, um, like what we're ordering for, you know, late night delivery.
Um, to sort of understand what GLP one users might still want to eat.
Yeah, it's sort of an anthropological approach, right?
Other companies since you know GLP once sort of big hit the mainstream in 2023 have taken this more wait and see approach to the drugs.
But because adoption has been ramping up so quickly with the advent of the pill form, um with health care coverage expanding, it's been increasingly hard for these companies to ignore.
And the strategy that lots of these companies are taking is sort of souping up their products with more protein, more fiber, and offering smaller portions, fewer calories.
When it comes to taste and sort of making food without the salt, fat, and sugar that turns off GLP1 users, but also the growing cohort of these sort of health conscious consumers.
Chefs at Canagra, for example, are are getting creative.
