In other words, what works in schizophrenia may work in depression.
Exactly.
And for far too long, and really encouraged by our diagnostic system, we work in silos.
People find something that works and a pathway of understanding that might work, and then that stays in that disorder and rarely translates.
A good example might actually be where this is starting to happen.
Something called cognitive training, which is a computerized online potentially training of certain brain circuits like those involved in higher level cognitive capacities.
Very well developed in schizophrenia and now starting to be applied to depression, to substance use and so forth.
And that clearly would map onto the circuit well.
That's the kind of thing we want to see more of on an even conceptual level to come out of the study.
But simply finding a commonality doesn't mean that all disorders are exactly the same and all patients are exactly the same.
So I just want to make sure that that doesn't get lost in the shuffle.
The reaction time was related to anxiety, but only when they're identifying unconscious fearful faces.
They were able to identify the color faster when they had unconsciously experienced a fearful face.
So you can think of a more anxious person as being a little bit more vigilant, watching out for something in the environment.
And so this unconscious threat enhanced that vigilance.
And enhancing vigilance just basically means you're paying
Paying more attention to something.
Basically, you can think of it in the perspective of what do you need to do if there's some threat around and you're trying to assess the threat.
And be vigilant towards it.
Right.
