These models that are being released now could be used to launch cyber attacks or develop new pathogens.
Almost anyone can use it.
So that is really setting off alarm bells.
It's still a little too early to tell definitively, but investors, people who have used them, analysts are generally very excited about this latest batch of Chinese models.
They're cheaper.
They also don't have a lot of the guardrails for security that a lot of the top U.S.
models have.
And that's fueling security concerns in Washington, has even the big U.S.
companies a bit rattled because they're essentially saying, why are you letting these Chinese companies do things that we can't?
That's essentially going to attract more of our user base potentially.
And it's sort of like another reset in the AI race.
It feels like we say that every month now, but it truly is.
You have officials more focused on national security, like the National Cyber Director and members of the National Security Council saying, hey, wait, we're restricting U.S.
models for these cyber concerns.
Maybe we need to do the same thing with these Chinese models.
On the other side, you have people like venture capitalist David Sachs, one of Trump's AI advisors, and they think access to the tools is key to preventing cyber attacks and bioweapons and things like that because they argue that AI can be used for defense.
There are two layers to the security concern.
The classic data privacy debate that's been going on for years now, that the data could end up making its way into the hands of the Chinese government.
