The couple posed in front of the burnt-out farmhouse for a story in the local paper.

They were soliciting furniture and clothing donations and made about $4,500.

Dan said the fire investigators told him they believed his tenants had burnt the house down for the insurance money.

But he said they swore him to secrecy.

To be clear, they were never charged with arson.

I couldn't ask Melissa and Chris about the fire or anything else because they declined our interview requests.

After the fire, their money problems continued.

They spent six months living in hotels with the kids, then moved back to Mississauga to a rental house.

They were both unemployed for the next year and a half.
