You're redefining your identity as part of coming out of the season of divorce.
So I want you to just be aware that whether you're doing it on your own or you're doing it with a professional organizer, that decluttering after divorce can be a little bit emotional because you don't quite know what items are actually going to trigger big feelings for you.
It might be that you're just doing fine and then you come across your wedding dress in your wardrobe and that's the thing that really hits home for you.
It might simply be a book that you love together or a board game that you played together or a hobby that you did.
And that can be like a really sticky point.
One of the things I would say is when you're first starting out to declutter after a divorce is take it easy.
Start with some categories that are pretty easy for you.
So it might be pretty easy for you to get rid of all of your ex-partner's clothes.
That might be the easiest thing where you're like, yeah, they left some in the wardrobe or here's some old things.
I just, I can't wait to get rid of all that.
For some people, that's going to be really, really tricky because that's like a real definitive closure.
And that actually is part of the benefit of decluttering after divorce is the act of decluttering can be a real point of closure where you're drawing a line in the sand as you're removing them physically from your life.
You've already perhaps gone through the legal system.
You've gone through finances and trying to work out who gets the home and making all of these decisions.
And some of your possessions may have been caught up in that.
But there is something about having done all of those kind of legal, important decisions where you then come down to, well, now I get to practically remove them from my life and whatever that looks like for some of you.
I don't want to assume that all divorce is bitter, that you all have like lots and lots of emotions around it, but probably at the time there's a level of grief that you're processing.
So it can be helpful to think about decluttering, bringing that closure.
Physical items can sometimes keep us stuck.
And this just isn't around divorce.
