Like how do you imagine the future?
For me,
Places that have never been allowed to imagine their own future because it has always been given to them by the process, yes, of colonization by the Spanish Empire so long ago, but also in so many ways in the 19th century and 21st century, just by colonization.
the industry coming and taking everything and just mining and taking natural resources because at the end, Latin America is so rich in natural resources.
So what I have seen is that a topic that is right now
that in the last 10 or 15 years has come into English language a lot, like this, we are destroying the world, the natural world, what is going to happen.
That theme just is in literature in Latin America from the 19th century and before.
Like, Latin America has always been a place whose nature has always been very exuberant, very untameable, but also...
very exploited by outside forces.
And I think it is in so many ways, not only in science fiction, but in so much of literary fiction too, throughout the 20th century and right now.
I feel there is something for science fiction to say.
What I've read and what I've seen, like science fiction, it's not mainstream genre in Latin America.
It's always on the fringes.
And I think that has given it the power to be very counter-cultural,
and very critical.
And with its own genre, because it's always talking... For a long time, it was always in conversation with...
Anglo and American and English science fiction and reacting to it.
But I feel in the last 10 years, something has shifted.
And I think Latin American science fiction is starting to look at itself and not so much on what's happening in English and just trying to create with the materials and the ideas we have here.
I don't know.
