He always wanted to work up till, you know, till he no longer could really like retirement was never, ever, ever something that was ever mentioned.
Ever in our house.
But no, he always would have wanted to work until he no longer could.
So I really struggled with that.
And I have a memory of being in St.
Luke's Hospital in Rathgar with Dad.
Dad ended up being in there for a month at one stage, getting radiation treatment once it had gone to his brain.
And I remember speaking to his radiation, the radiation oncologist at the time, and he knew I was really struggling with why, you know.
And he had, the way he described it to me, I have about three or four different people whose advice is kind of, is embedded in my own brain, and I often quote them to other people now, unfortunately, and
friends, families that are going through something similar but I remember him he was a consultant and he was from Tipperary I remember and he kind of was quite similar to dad in that he was just quite direct not abrupt in a rude way but just very to the point and very matter of fact
And I was kind of saying to him one afternoon, I said, why and why dad and why didn't we give him the treatment before?
And he said to me one day, he said, Andrea, he said, it's as simple as this.
He said, dying of cancer.
He said, being the person who dies from cancer or requires cancer treatment, he said, it's as random as a plane of sick children going to Lourdes, falling out of the sky.
That's how random this is.
That's it.
It's random.
It's the randomness of winning the lotto.
That's what it is.
And he said, absolutely, you can make lifestyle choices throughout your life that will increase your risks of cancer.
