So even with countries that we had a free trade treaty with, if the Americans increased their tariff level, we would supposedly have to uh do the same uh we would have to do the same. matched

clearly way beyond just China or free trade treaties with non market economies. matched

Uh so if that reporting is correct, it was uh clearly intolerable, but but of a peace with American ambitions generally. matched

Um they've been making similar demands of other countries, but they've particularly matched

in view of their sort of goals of hemispheric dominance, quote unquote. matched

uh as expressed in their uh um you know national security strategy, um this is very important to them. matched

And it's equally important to us, obviously, uh to be able to trade freely with other countries, particularly because and this is where these things are very hard to reconcile. matched

Um our ambition at this point, and I think this crosses all party lines, is to diversify our trade away from the United States, to make ourselves less dependent on them and therefore less vulnerable to manipulation. matched

Since it's very clear that this administration, at least, wants to weaponize that dependence to badger us into submission on a whole range of fronts. matched

Um and equally clearly, uh, if that is their source of leverage, then the matched

The Trump administration is going to be very unwilling to see us diversifying our trade. matched

So it these two things really meet on that. matched

Um that we would we wanna get out from under the American's thumb and they wanna keep us there. matched

Uh so I don't see how that is easily matched

I don't think the Americans' goal here is to get to a deal. matched

I think their goal is uh to keep using tariffs and the threat of tariffs. matched
