So the automatic thought of the journalist or the minister or the senior civil servant when faced with a new problem is not, let's go and find out what the data says, let's go and look at the truth.
It's to do other things, and all too often the data is asked for by the journalist or the minister or the civil servant after they've worked out what they think the answer is.
And I think we need to completely transform that.
Well, they need to have their political antennae well developed, but part of that has to be the truth.
And the data is a crucial part of the truth.
So you can't have really well developed political antennae unless you've also looked at the data.
I think there are some signs that things are getting better over the last 10 or 20 years.
I think the availability of data has come along with a growing interest and there is a significant community.
There are still, though, areas where, as you say, we seem to have a million miles to go.
It's not very long ago that a major broadsheet newspaper in this country divided one number by another and got the decimal point in the wrong place and said that something that actually averaged out at about £400 a household...
