The other disc was going to be the longer, extended, improvisational blues pieces like Tarot Plane and Mirror Man.
That disc was to be credited to the twenty fifth century Quakers, and the idea was that the group would use that name and be their own support act, coming out first dressed as Quakers and playing the jamming music, then going off stage, changing into their normal performance clothes, and coming back on as the magic band.
This sort of idea was obviously in the air in LA at the time, with the Turtles Battle of the Bands album where they performed as a variety of different band names, or the mothers cruising with Reuben and the Jets, both being recorded around this time.
And obviously the Beatles had done a similar thing that summer with Sergeant Pepper's lonely hearts club band.
Which likely influenced all these examples.
After the initial sessions for the Brown Rapper album, the group was sent on a promotional tour of parts of Europe, which turned into a bit of a disaster.
Krasno apparently messed up getting equipment for the group again for a major performance for record industry people, while Pete Meaden, the former manager of the Who, who was organizing the UK leg of the tour, forgot to sort out their work permits, which led to them being detained at Heathrow and deported to Germany, before being allowed back the next day after the paperwork had been put in order.
The reports from the officials at the airport make for hilarious reading, with the band saying they weren't coming to the UK to work and the immigration officials pointing out the adverts in the NME for the band's gigs.
At one point the report says Faced with this, Mr Meaden at first protested his innocence, but finally both he and the group admitted that the engagements had been arranged.
Mr Meaden then pleaded for clemency on the grounds of his own stupidity, a plea which was rejected.
That tour was arranged by Buddha Records, but the group wouldn't remain on the label, though they did remain with Bob Krasno.
There is no sensible coherent version of how this ended up happening, but by April of nineteen sixty eight the Magic Band were no longer signed to Buddha Records, and the plain brown rapper sessions would remain unreleased until nineteen seventy one, at which point Buddha would release an album titled Mirrorman, the first of a seemingly endless series of repackagings of the material from these sessions they were put out.
The next album by Captain Befight and his magic band was instead strictly personal.
Though you could be forgiven on listening to it for thinking it was plain brown.
Gary Marker, who was still associated with the band, offered the best explanation for what led to the group re recording the material for Krasno's new label Blue Thumb, saying later with Buddha, they didn't want it.
It would be more like Krasno not to tell Don they hate you because he'd already been through that with AM.
He probably said, Don't worry, I'm going to start my own label, and got him as a severance deal, 'cause that's the way they do things.
Dun Van Vliet apparently came up with the name of Blue Thumb, which went on to be quite an important label in the seventies, and the new album, strictly personal, made up largely of re recordings of the more songlike material from the plain brown rapper sessions, was going to be the first album the new label released.
Possibly because this is a collection of re recordings and the band had time to second guess their performances, or perhaps just because it's a finished record rather than a collection of unfinished outtakes.
Strictly personal is a far tighter and more coherent set of performances than the Brown Rapper ones.
