For someone making their maiden speech, I'm in the unusual position of already having made history in this house.

On October 26, 1996, the Times reported, the mobile phone has finally breached the last bastion of low-tech tranquility, the House of Commons.

I have always kept quiet about this, but today own up as the naive researcher who made that historic call.

I am relieved to say it has not harmed the career of the Right Honourable Member on the receiving end, and I can only hope that my future contributions to this House will be less irritating than that one.

I think it was more a case of not agreeing with what she did or the way that she did it.

But at least she, I guess, made decisions and governed.

My criticism here is this isn't government.

I know people at home are fed up with politics.

I hear you.

And I want to be honest with you.

We have not been good enough.

And we need to be better.
