In 1986, when they both got their first cap together, they sort of shot on the scene.
Back in the amateur days, there was a Scotland national trial on the first Saturday in January.
It was the Blues against Reds, the Probables against the Possibles.
And in 1986, six players got their first cap in that game against France at Murrayfield.
Two of them were David Sowell and Finn Calder.
So there was a great crop coming through.
Gavin was this, I was 15, I was in the North Terrace watching this game and Gav was this rock at the back, massive boot and he came charging into the line.
But Scott was this young 21 year old, very athletic, quite quick, much quicker than his brother as he would remind everyone about.
And just the way he approached the game was just incredible.
And that year, in the same Five Nations as it was, obviously, against England, Scotland produced an unbelievable performance.
And I remember Scott, I think, finished the scoring off with this length of field try that he finished off right in front of the North Stand.
And you just saw what he could bring to the game.
And then three years later, he went with the Lions to Australia.
He was a proper player.
He was quick.
He was strong.
There's always the debate, isn't there, guys, about what player from a previous era could make it in this professional era now.
Scott Hastings could 100% make it in this professional era now.
He might be a 12 rather than a 13 as he was, but he was a proper player.
