Financial abuse is one of the most common forms of domestic and family violence, and it's actually one of the most effective ways to keep someone in an abusive relationship by
limiting things like their independence and their options.
Now, for those that don't know, it occurs when money or finances or assets like property are used to control or to exploit another person without their consent.
And I think the challenge is that it's often less visible than physical abuse, which means that people may not recognise it as abuse until harm is well and
It can often even escalate when a victim-survivor leaves a relationship.
Now, financial abuse can impact anyone, but some groups can actually be at greater risk.
First Nations women, for example, we know are 31 times more likely to be hospitalised due to family violence.
We also see financial abuse in culturally and linguistically diverse communities and
amongst people who identify as LGBTQIA+, and people with disability, even right through to small business owners who can be subject to coerced directorships or forced debt.

So in 2020, we made a long-term commitment to support people in Australia affected by domestic and family violence and financial abuse.
we want people to know that they're not alone.
And so the support that we have available includes a dedicated trauma-informed specialist team that provides immediate and confidential support.
Things like opening up safe accounts, removing unauthorised access to someone's banking and connecting people with support within the bank, but also outside of the bank.
Also, longer-term recovery through programs like Good Shepherd's Financial Independence Hub
which we proudly fund and which has seen over 16,000 participants through since inception.
