The method often used is Bayes' theorem.
In a courtroom, it forces you to logically examine how to revise your views of whether a suspect is more or less likely to be guilty given each new piece of evidence.
Well, there's the rub.
Statisticians love numbers and they love Bayes, but judges don't.
Courts have even ruled in the past that can formally confuse jurors.
In fact, there was a murder case last year, R versus T, in which a judge went so far as to rule that Bayes' theorem shouldn't be used for certain evidence, including fibre matching.
