And he was talking about his first combat experience and how basically he'd been assigned to sit at the top of this truck and just keep a watch out.
And the moment that bullets started coming, he panicked, ducked inside the turret and was so frightened that he actually started to bend the metal of the gun that he was supposed to be holding.
And the guy in the truck who was driving it, who's more experienced, called up to him.
But this was like, hey, how many trucks are there ahead of us?
And the guy up in the tarp was panicking, took a deep breath and looked forward.
And he said, there's six trucks behind us.
And he went down and said, how many trucks are there behind us?
And he looked up, went back.
And the more he started being given these little tasks, the more he started to get his momentum back.
And he said, that taught me that whenever you see someone in a panicking situation, you should walk over to them calmly.
And they're basically like, what's the first step that you can take in a direction?
And if you can't find that step yourself, I'm going to give you a little bit of a nudge and then I'm going to back off and let you find your next step.
And I'm going to keep coming back to you and giving you your first step.
And what we find is that once you start to get into that momentum of taking that first step, your brain starts to get back its ability to plan, to imagine, to have intuition, and starts to take those next steps.
And this is a skill we try and teach now to young people because young people exist in almost a permanent state of fight or flight.
They're almost always panicking.
And that the way that they're coping with that panic is they're allowing someone in their environment to tell them what to do.
So they're always taking a plan from somebody else.
What are my parents telling me to do?
Especially if you start to get towards graduating college or graduating high school, these kinds of things.
