And as the people started to wrestle with this problem, they started to say, well, there must be another form of intelligence out there.
What could that other form of intelligence be?
And then really around the 70s and 80s, people started to come together over this idea of emotional intelligence.
I said, well, you know, if it's not just about IQ, which is logic, then there's this other thing called emotion.
So that's got to be the key.
It's got to be this emotional intelligence.
And what they came up with was really a focus on what we would now call empathy.
And the idea being that people who have high emotional intelligence are able to read other people's emotions very effectively and make good decisions off the basis of that.
But there are two problems with EQ as an explanation.
First of all, it doesn't actually work.
It's been tested a lot and it doesn't work.
And because something doesn't work scientifically, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's wrong.
Maybe we haven't figured out how to test it.
So there's always that caveat you've got to have.
But we've been totally unable to validate it.
And the other reason it doesn't really work is because it would require you to be psychic.
because it would suggest that somehow I have to understand your emotions.
And then in order to explain how I could understand your emotions, what EQ says is, well, you understand your own emotions.
And by understanding your own emotions, that allows you to read other people's emotions.
But the problem with that is that we're not different anymore.
