And there's been a number of vigils that have been held since the discovery by
affected families and I expect another one to be held at the end of the hearing this week.
I think there's certainly been an element of chaotic management at the company obviously for some sort of time.
There has been evidence previously from company records after the discovery.
It was a bit of reporting on the fact that
His company owed the city council a large amount of money, and that's almost certainly related to the council's crematorium services, which would have been used over the years.
It's also fair to say that his company targeted people on low incomes by offering relatively cheap funeral and cremation services.
So many of the victims were also sold funeral plans, which he failed to honour.
And there has been evidence that he actually
stole money that had been set aside for charitable donations as part of the process as well by families.
Well, additional support has been provided by the local council and the local health services pretty much since day one.
And there has been a lot of sort of counselling going on in the background.
The police as well have obviously been involved in that.
The judge in the hearing this week is expected to pass sentence on Friday tomorrow.
And because of the unprecedented nature of the case, it would be fascinating to see what he actually does.
decides to do in terms of a sentence, because this is a really, as I say, this sort of thing has never really come before the courts before on this sort of scale.
um well we haven't yet um when the judge starts you sentencing you'll probably refer to the sentence and guidelines at the moment we've just had the evidence from the prosecution the victims uh statements and today we expect to get a bit of medication from um the from the defense if you like um but he's obviously probably going to jail there's no question of that it's just a case of how long that's going to be
And beyond that, we've had the local MP, Emma Hardy, she's been lobbying for tougher regulation of the funeral industry in the UK since this case has emerged.
And she's lined up a meeting with Andy Burnham, the new Prime Minister, in the next couple of weeks to discuss the case.
At the moment, in the UK, there's no regulatory regime covering the funeral industry.
