And I think for reasons that are not really understood...

Some psychedelics turn the volume up on the sense of reality and we feel that things are more real.

I don't think that's always the case though.

You know, I certainly, and again, I'm speaking just like anecdotally from my own experience.

Sometimes I'm very well, you know, I kind of experienced the psychedelic experience is definitely less real than the reality that I'm in every day.

What was it like when you did ACID?

I tried LSD for the first time when I had already been doing neuroscience for quite a long time.

It wasn't available when I was growing up as a kid in South Oxfordshire.

At least I didn't know whether it was or not.

In one sense, the experience was sort of exactly too strong.

In one sense, it was very aligned with what I expected to happen.

But at the same time, the first-person experience always adds something.

Reminded me of, there's a famous thought experiment in philosophy called Mary's Room.

And Mary's, the idea is Mary is a scientist.

She studies color, vision.

But she spent her whole life in a black and white environment.

It's a very boring life in a way.

She's just down there in this basement thinking.

reading books about the brain, doing experiments.

She knows everything there is to know about how color vision is supposed to work.
