It really might be right.

I don't know if any of the options on the menu of metaphysics are the correct ones.

Panpsychism is not my choice of main dish, but it might be right.

I don't think it is.

But let me steel man it.

A friend and colleague of mine, Philip Goff, is a philosopher working in the UK.

We've had him on.

You've had him on.

So he's a prominent advocate for panpsychism.

And I think he gives a good account.

So he's a good steel man person for it.

And if I try to paraphrase Philip's view, it's something, go something like this.

Science has done a brilliant job of explaining how things behave, how things interact with each other.

A materialistic view of the world is all about that.

It's about how atoms bounce off each other, how fields constrain, how things move, cause and effect.

That's fine.

But materialist science, in Philip's view, doesn't actually tell us what anything is intrinsically.

Science is all about how things react to each other.

It's not about what something actually is.
