But we don't perceive the model.
We use the model to generate these best guesses.
And these best guesses are what we actually perceive.
Yeah.
I mean, part of the challenge is that none of our kind of everyday language words really fit the bill.
They'll always fail us.
They always fail us.
And this is, for me, it's one reason I was always drawn to
working both with language, but also with mathematics, physics, computer science, because if you write down the equations, it sort of makes sense what I'm talking about.
You have probability distributions and things like that.
But that doesn't really help if we want to convey the concepts more intuitively.
So yeah, I use controlled hallucination.
And the reason I use it is because
When we typically say hallucination, what we mean is an experience that's coming from within.
I might hear a voice and there's nobody actually speaking.
I might see a person and there's nobody actually there.
The connotation of hallucination is an internally generated experience.
And I think that's also true for everyday perception as well.
But for everyday perception, these hallucinations...
which are the brain's internally generated predictions, they're controlled by the sensory signals that come in through the eyes and the ears.
