We can't escape continuous time.

The tendrils of entropy will always suck us in.

But in an algorithm, time doesn't matter.

Only sequence matters.

You could have a microsecond or a year between two steps of an algorithm.

It's the same algorithm.

So the idea that all that matters about the brain is just algorithm, I think, is demonstrably, or I would say, very likely to be wrong.

Everything we know about brains points that that's not the case.

What we have instead, I think, is systems that mimic consciousness very persuasively, but they're not actually conscious underneath.

Experts in machine learning also think this.

Geoffrey Hinton, one of the godfathers of AI, has said it several times that he thinks AI is already conscious.

And again, that just fuels the wider belief because he's an extremely smart guy.

He's got a Nobel Prize.

And he created AI.
