But I was trying to imagine the feelings that I had listening to that, the life I was living, and fundamentally who I was.

And there's a sense in which it's the same person, but there's a sense in which that person hasn't existed for a long time, never died, just changed.

And this brings us to these other, the contemplative views, right?

The Buddhist view of the self as a process.

And I think the more we think about that, the more we realize that what a self is is not a persistent essence of anything.

It's always changing.

And so what dies is not a single person that's just been there for however many years.

It's a sense of self at a particular time.

The more we can hold the nature of self lightly, I think that can help us come to terms with the prospect of not existing.

But I still wonder what it will feel like as that moment gets closer and closer.

It's quite possible that there's almost nothing in common.

I don't know.

I mean, in some sense...

I'm a lot bigger as a person, but I'm still roughly the same.

My proportions haven't changed that much.

There is a thread of continuity, of course, because it's the same body and the same brain.

That is not exactly the same.

Of course, it changes, so it's not exactly the same.

But there has been some kind of continuity interrupted.

We fall asleep.
