So we're at the early stages of testing whether strobe-induced hallucinations can be a potential intervention for major depression.

Now, I have to stress, we don't know yet.

It's very early, early days, but it strikes me as a hypothesis worth testing, and we're going to do that.

And then more generally, my lab is really just interested in drilling ever further down into the nature of perception and the nature of self and unpacking what these mechanisms are within the brain that give rise to these experiences and just pulling further on this thread.

And ultimately, the question I really want to understand, if I sort of think

If I look back towards the end of my life and think, did I figure that out?

The question I want to figure out is this question of life.

Is consciousness really tied to life or not?

Are we conscious because of our nature's living systems or is that just something that happens to be the case but is not really necessary?

So that's the long road, but it's a road that I'm determined to keep walking down.

I mean, just this, I feel that, you know, when I started out as a student in the 1990s, the idea of having a career, working on thinking about consciousness was seen completely out of the question.

At that time, consciousness was

was not really considered particularly legitimate in sciences, at least not in the UK where I was.

So I just feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to think about consciousness, to work on it, to talk about it to broader audiences, to indulge the curiosity that I feel for something that's so fundamental.

And I feel it's been a privilege.
