We're not going to experience that.

It's necessarily going to be something else.

And that something else is then will have been tuned by evolution to be useful, not to be the most faithful representation of how things are.

And we can measure this.

So one of the experiments we've been doing at Sussex is called the perception census.

So motivated a bit by the photo of the dress, but also by some other work we've done using stroboscopic light to give people visual hallucinations.

So they'll be like, you'll flash a white light very quickly.

Exactly.

Yeah, we flash a white light, just pure white.

We flash it at around...

It varies, but let's say 10 hertz, so 10 flashes per second, which happens to be the kind of frequency at which your visual brain naturally oscillates.

You flash a bright light around that frequency, have someone sit in front of it with their eyes closed, they will have pretty extraordinary visual experiences, at least most people do.

They'll see colors.

The colors aren't there.

Your eyes are closed and the light is just white.

People see other things too, patterns and shapes and geometries.

But everybody experiences something a bit different.

But...

what they're looking at is always the same.
