That's not what free will is all about.
It's not that there's something that can change the course of events that has got nothing to do with what's happening in the physical world.
Free will, for me anyway, it just means that in a particular situation, I can perform an action.
The causes of that action come largely from within me as an organism.
And those causes have previous causes.
I might choose to drink a cup of tea rather than coffee because I like tea.
Why do I like tea?
Because I was born in England and I was brought up on tea.
I didn't choose any of those things.
That's just the way I am.
But it still counts as a voluntary action because it comes from within and I perceive it as a voluntary action too.
In my case, in my take, free will is just another kind of perception.
It's a perception of those actions that come from within.
Well, the first thing there is I don't think we are computers running software.
This is an old analogy about the brain that it's a computer and it processes information and the mind and consciousness is the right kind of software.
I don't think that's the case.
But the point about free will is slightly different.
The point about free will is there's no other you that can go in and make you do something different.
The experience of being you is all there is, and that's generated by the brain too.
