No, it wasn't.

It wasn't the same at all.

When I left art school, there couldn't have been 10 artists in the UK who made a living from their work.

You know, Henry Moore, David Hockney, Lucian Freud, et cetera.

Almost everybody taught to make a living and then did their work.

And that's what I thought I would do.

So my generation is the one older than the YBAs, the one before the YBAs.

The art world changed, and suddenly it became possible to sell objects.

We made a living from our work, amazingly.

That has taken over to such a huge extent that it's hugely problematic.

Now, I've been very, very, very lucky, may I say.

But I have two sides to my work.

I make certain works that are in the market and that, as you've just said, are there and do very well for me.

And then the other side of my work, which is for me the true adventure, I've almost never sold a single one.

So a wax piece.

There's maybe one in a museum.

Precisely.

And that's what makes it possible in a sense.

This highly geometric, perfectly made, very classically conceived thing that I feel is important.

And then the messy, visceral, whatever, the other side.
