We spoke English at home.
Most of my friends spoke either a regional language, of which there are so many in India, or Hindi at home.
But everybody spoke English.
English was at school.
I went to the Dune School with my brother Roy in Dehradun.
And the Dune School was, let's say, I don't know, the so-called Eton of India in those days.
I was going to say this is a very privileged school.
It's a very privileged school.
And, you know, my father earned a pittance.
We went there because there was privilege for high-ranking naval officers who were allowed to send their children to such a school.
We could never have afforded to go there otherwise.
Oh my gosh, that is a hard part.
That's a hard thing.
It was the time when Ethiopian Jews were coming into Israel in the early 70s.
And suddenly we were called Kushi.
Kushi meaning black.
I mean, I'm brown.
My brother's much fairer than I am.
We were shocked, shocked at how it could be that here we, supposedly coming home, the homeland of the Jews, we were suddenly set apart again.
And it was clear this was a term of abuse.
