our body reacts the same way so it's actually so crazy how um you know you have that feeling physically nauseous you know that fight flight response of kind of for some people that might be nauseous heart rate racing um your your breathing changing um because we detect social threats in the same way as we would any other physical threat so it is a very emotional and physical response
Yes.
Like literally.
Totally.
Yeah, exactly.
Exactly.
But you can see how, and this is such a cool thing to unpack actually, a good example because statement is so neutral, but we've placed so much meaning and it happens in a split second, right?
So you have that immediate emotional response, but what's happened between what was said and your response is kind of that interpretation of what meaning you laid on that.
And I assume it's something like,
i'm in trouble or i've done something wrong yeah yeah definitely yeah there's so many layers to it do you like what do you find are the most common situations where people do take things personally we take things personally in areas that we have closely tied to our sense of self-worth and identity
So if I am a career person, I'm probably going to be more sensitive to any cues that I'm not doing the right thing work wise than somebody who's actually like I work to live, not live to work.
I don't really care so much.
They might be a lot less prone to take things personally in that space.
So we we take things personally where we care most.
And probably most of us can relate to the relationship side because we're really, you know, geared as humans to care a lot about relationships.
And so the people that are closest to us have a lot to do with our sense of identity and safety.
And so we do tend to care about what people that we know say about us more than, you know, some random stranger on the street.
Yeah, definitely.
The trolls out there.
Yeah, the trolls.
