I thought, okay, I've come to break up with my novel.
Wow, there's a great idea for a novel.
And I started writing this novel.
I like five days after I had thrown out the other novel, which is so not the way I work.

If you spend all that time working on a book, it doesn't matter that you weren't working on the book that you wound up writing.
You were working on a book.

that got you up to speed and that's the thing that got you launched.
So yeah, it was very different, but it worked.

I mean, I certainly know writers who say, oh, no, I would never, never talk about a book that I haven't written.
It would kill it.
And I'm like, I'm not that person.
Like, there was a night I was stuck in an airport with a friend of mine.
She had come with me to do an event.
I can't remember where we were.
