That can be helpful.
Some states have advocates who actually work for the state.
There are not-for-profit organizations that can help you, maybe free of charge.
And there are also advocates who will work for a fee that you can try as well.
It can help if you've gotten as far as you can down the road with the hospital.
It's really just not something you can manage.
You can seek out that expert advice.
And just to set expectations, how likely is this to actually work?
Well, it depends on the hospital.
It depends on the situation.
It is definitely the case that a lot of people are eligible for financial aid, and that can help hugely.
Sometimes they will forgive the entire bill if you are at a certain income level.
And a sad fact is there are people who get sent to collections who were eligible for financial assistance, but they didn't know it.
You know, anytime someone gets sent to collections, it's horrible.
But if they get sent to collections when they actually didn't have to pay the bill under the hospital's own financial aid policies, that seems particularly ironic and horrible.
So it is definitely worth engaging.
It doesn't always get you to where you need to be financially.
Sometimes, as I said, the hospital will just not go where you need them to go in terms of bringing down the cost.
But you definitely, definitely, definitely should try because often it does get quite a bit lower.
