The original Tom Cruise was an older brother of my mother, whom I never knew, and he had emigrated to America and had done very well for himself in setting up the first supermarket chain up in Massachusetts.
But out of the blue, changed direction and enlisted in the American Air Force to become a pilot.
And there were loads of letters that my grandmother had kept from his death down in a place down in Florida and Key West in Florida.
And that's where he died.
And nobody knew a thing because his body couldn't be brought back.
So I set off to try and find him.
And I went down to Key West and visited the actual place of his crash and the reasons why he changed.
He became more American than American Pie.
Well, it was like my journey in biography coming full circle.
I was approached by a publisher to write again something about Ken Whittaker.
Well, that took three years to do.
And my goodness, the man covered so many aspects of modern life in Ireland.
It was incredible.
I remember nights when I had a notebook beside the bed and something had hit me in the morning to ask him because I did 60 hours interviews with him.
And he gave me all his personal papers, unrestricted,
uh to look at and indeed he didn't read the biography himself until it was in the shops so ken whittaker really i suppose looked on me as a biographer and was happy that i go with didn't have a lot of time for charlie high
Well, no, they had their ups and downs.
But, you know, at the same time, Whittaker would be very objective about it.
But they would have clashed when he was governor of the central bank because Charlie Howe, who was minister for finance at the time, and he wanted to take over his department to take over credit policy, which was central bank.
