It's got to go back to the people who can drill down and ask some of those questions.
Have we got it right?
Should we be doing more of this?
Should we be doing less?
Should we actually be ensuring patients are getting the spectrum of options here?
Your care, really, and the decisions about what to do about your care starts with your local GP, right?
Well, I think that's part of this really important question.
Have we got it right?
Are we informing patients of risks and benefits?
Are we letting people know of treatment options?
These are really, I think, very important questions that we've not actually seen in the cold light of day, as this data now shows.
It is clear there's variation for all the conditions we've looked at.
And what we really want to know, how much of this is warranted variation?
It is absolutely based on patients' needs, preferences, and how much it can't be explained by that.
And we really need to get better at it because we do not want to be exposing people to harm when there's no benefit.
And we do not want to be wasting dollars that could be used elsewhere on people who really do need it.
So where to from here?
Well, we want feedback from people, it is up on the Australian Commission's website, it's been sent to a whole lot of groups, there's work already being done at the different states in terms of variation and so this adds to that work.
The other work that really we've not done as much as we really should be doing and there's lots of work that needs to be done and certainly the Commission is doing work on that,
is providing the information to patients, providing the information to doctors to give to patients in a way that patients can understand to help make decisions, particularly when there are a number of treatment options.
