You could be missing out on withholding.

So if your employer is holding back money to help you with your taxes and you weren't required to file because you're below the income threshold, you won't get those withholdings back.

And again, there are state tax credits and other benefits that are delivered through the tax code, depending on where you are, that can add up pretty quickly.

It's not just that people don't know about the benefits.

Many people know and are desperately trying to figure out how to access these benefits.

It's that it's actually too hard for people.

It's a really complicated process.

Frankly, there are a lot of scams out there, sites that say that they're free, that they're not free.

And people are justifiably concerned about where can I get free, trustworthy support to do this?

And

can't pay the $150 or $200 that they might need in order to file their taxes successfully and get access to these benefits.

So that's really why we created the website getyourrefund.org, is to create a place where people could go and they would know that it was trustworthy, they'd know it had the blessing of the IRS and local nonprofits, and they could get the support that they need in order to be able to successfully file their taxes and get access to these benefits.

So Code for America, when we first realized that there was this huge opportunity for low-income families to access the cash support that they needed through the Earned Income Tax Credit, we looked around at the landscape of providers and sort of what was out there and found a program from the IRS called the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, often known as VITA.

And those are nonprofit organizations based in local communities that receive funds and training and support and certification from the IRS to do free tax prep for low-income communities.

These programs are amazing, but it can sometimes be hard for people to access them.

So if you're in a rural area or you are at work and you can't make it to the clinic time, then you might miss out on being able to use VITA.

And they're really just an excellent program that provides very, very high quality tax prep.

So what we did is that we partnered with the VITA programs to take that process and make it digital.

Now, when you go on getyourrefund.org, you can be connected to a VITA provider and you fill out some basic information about your household.

You take pictures of your tax documents.
