Two urban planners, Benny Bonape and Bob Lewis, pitched the idea to the city and to farmers that they recruited from the region.

A non-profit called Grow NYC manages the markets.

They vet farms, so making sure the produce all comes from where it says it does, and decide when to set up a new neighborhood market.

They also created a system which other farmers markets in America have adopted.

That allows people to seamlessly use their food welfare benefits with all the vendors.

But the region around New York grows a ton of beautiful produce too.

And it not only features in menus now at most of the city's best restaurants, but it really shapes the menus.
