But he knows, I've got to get this ball off.
And so as the pocket breaks down, and one of the reasons, Marshall, to one of your earlier questions too, the Rams did a really impressive job of keeping a funnel around the pocket.
There were normally edge defenders and linebackers screaming toward the sideline, so Caleb couldn't have as many opportunities.
to extend the play laterally.
So there you had edge defenders from L.A.
who were screaming up the field.
So Caleb didn't have the opportunity to run laterally as he normally likes to escape to.
So he bursts straight back.
And you're just wondering how far backwards is he going to run and how big of a risk is he taking?
But he recognizes it.
And whenever you watch Caleb running around, even if he is running laterally, you'll see on occasion he'll still take a quick peek laterally
just to tell whether or not there's a defender nearby who's going to dive at his feet, who's going to leap for the ball as he's got it exposed.
In that scenario, he's running straight backwards, glances sideways for a moment, and then just gets his body turned around with enough time to be able to fire the ball over 50 yards in the air as he's running what's likely got to be over 20 miles an hour in the opposite direction, gets his hips and his shoulders squared up well enough to float a ball
And recognize, remember where his playmaker is supposed to be in that moment.
I cannot tell you all the mental gymnastics that that had to take for him to pull that off in that moment.
And then when you think about it, the offensive player knows where he's supposed to be.
The defender trying to track the ball in the air, almost like a punt returner with where he delivers it to that back pylon.
And there's Cole Komet just waiting for the home run swing.
It's awe-inspiring what he can do in those moments and the fact that we have seen him progress in the way at all the mundane, all the standard mechanics of quarterback play and all the progress he's made there.
Caleb Williams has the potential to become the ultimate weapon
