And what's not stated in the story is...

Who called the regulators?

Who called the SEC?

Somebody called the SEC.

One of the investors called the SEC after getting rid of the rest of the investors and saying, okay, this is probably now a smoking crater, meaning the money is evaporated and there'll be no follow-on and there'll be no value to sell.
