And in order to foster the growth of other democracies and to strengthen the free world, we did have some asymmetrical tariffs out there.
Donald Trump is saying he doesn't want to do that anymore.
This is the closing of the American economy, the closing of the American mind, and the closing of the ideals of America.
Trump is going to hurt us in a number of different ways, but let me just mention the top three, and then I'm happy to take questions.
He's hurting our soft power now around the world, which will have a deep impact on our dollar.
Number two, he's hurting our economy because we did set this trading system up in a way to create symmetrical cross-border trading, which would foment growth in the United States.
And he's going to curtail that.
And then the third thing, and this is probably the most important thing for people to understand is,
that the tariffs that he's proposing is a broad-scale consumption tax on the society, which is very regressive, Don.
And what do I mean by that?
Rich people can pay it more easily, but it's going to eat into the disposable income of the poor people.
the lower income people and the middle class.
And it'll be a burden for them.
And I just want to point out to people yesterday's poll on how Trump is handling trade policy.
He's down to a 36 percent approval rating.
Stock market is down another three or four percent now.
We'll be down 15 since January 20th.
And this is literally an unmitigated disaster, and it's an adventure in stupidity because what he's proposing doesn't even fit with the way the world is set up from a trading perspective or the way the United States is set up.
So those are my initial remarks.
