This often led to devastating side effects like incontinence and erectile dysfunction.
UCSF urologist Matt Cooperberg says many of these men were overdiagnosed and over-treated.
But according to Cooperberg's research, the tide has shifted in the last 20 years, especially at the VA.
Doctors have backed off over-treatment.
Now ninety three percent of low risk prostate cancers are monitored with blood tests and checkups.

35 people were hospitalized, three needed liver transplants, and three died.
Some dogs have also died.
