We just bought it from Geo Media.
And each owner, because of the time and when they actually owned it, had their own vision.
Our vision for The Root right now is to go, as Professor Gates said, take it back to its roots.
Be a place where you can get news of the day, political commentary, understand what's happening in the culture.
One of the things that's so powerful about The Root is that it is keen to the written word.
But with all of the articles that we write, we also want to bring some video components into it.
uh amplify on our social media really engage with our audience we have such a low loyal following um and they're so excited to get a fresh perspective now that it's under new ownership and particularly black ownership telling black stories that i i just think that the time is right it was gutsy but why not you know yeah thank you it's a gutsy move and you know um
No, no, we are not.
We are going, a couple of things that we're gonna focus on.
uh throughout my career i like to move with intention with stability for the long game right i don't want to make massive changes right now because we have a loyal audience what i actually want to do is hear from them we're going to be asking our followers we get about 15 million people to visit our website every month which is yeah matt we have four million people that follow us across social media platforms that's a massive audience and i want them to one know i'm grateful
for their loyalty over the years.
Know that I don't take them for granted.
And I want to hear from them.
Like, what do you want to be reading?
What would keep you subscribing?
What would keep you sharing things on the route?
So that's the first thing is we're going to go through a listening exercise.
But we do find ourselves in this moment where so much is happening.
And I always say Black culture sets American culture and American culture sets global culture.
And so I think one of the things that we really want to be keen on at The Root is helping Black people through the Black lens make sense of every moment that we find ourselves in, particularly in politics and culture.
